Huntly Community Council is one of the many Community Councils that exist across Aberdeenshire.

Its role “is to ascertain ,co-ordinate and express to the local Authority for its area, and to public authorities, the views of the community which it represents in relation to matters for which those authorities are responsible and to take such action in the interests of that community as appears to it to be expedient and practicable. It is non party political and non sectarian in its discussions and in its decision making.”

The need for a Community Council in Huntly was first suggested in a letter to the Editor of the Huntly Express which was printed on the 20th. January 1989.A further letter in March indicated that a petition was ready to be sent to Gordon District Council and over the following months nominations were received and elections were held in two wards on 20th. July 1989.

The first meeting of Huntly Community Council was held on 10th. August 1989 and it has been in existence ever since.

It has its own unique Constitution and is bound by the Aberdeenshire Scheme for the Establishment of Community Councils in accordance with the terms of Section 22 of the Local Scotland etc. (Scotland) Act 1994.

Since 2003, it has had its own Logo which is displayed in the Stewarts Hall, Huntly and used on Community Council stationary.

Membership of the Community Council is through a process of nomination and election and there may be a maximum of 12 members however at present here are 10. Members are elected for a period of 3 years however individuals may be co-opted onto the Council but must go through the normal nomination process prior to the following May when the AGM is held.

Huntly Community Council holds its meetings in the Stewarts Hall, Huntly on the third Thursday of every month with the exception of July, August and December.

Its Annual General Meeting is held in May and from time to time, Special Meetings are convened for the purpose of considering matters of special interest or importance. All meetings are open to the public except when the Community Council may, by resolution, agree to go into private session because of the nature of the issue under consideration.

Minutes are available for inspection at the Brander Library, Huntly, displayed on the Community Council Notice Board in the Stewarts Hall Window on Gordon Street and hopefully will soon be on the Huntly Community Website.

Huntly Community Council is made up of individuals each with their own skills, their own expertise, their own interests but when it meets, it works as a team and acts as a link between the people of Huntly, elected Councillors, Aberdeenshire Council and other organisations.

It discusses issues of concern, planning issues and suggests how Huntly could be improved. It is important to note however that the Community Council doesn’t just focus on the negative, it also tries to promote the positive e.g. it revived the idea of Flower Barrels in the Square which has now been taken over by the Floral Fund Group, it has established “ Entertainment in the Square” which is Huntly’s annual showcase of local talent offering free, non-stop Music & Dance from 12 Noon till 11p.m. on the first Sunday in June, it promotes the Garden Competition, the Christmas Shop Window Display Competition, it supports the Strathbogie Junior Fiddlers & presents a Shield and Certificate to the most improved musician and it spearheaded the campaign to raise money for the Gordon Highlanders Memorial which can be seen beside the Simpson Block at the Gordon Schools. It supports groups and causes relating to the town and acknowledges the achievements especially of youngsters. It has more ideas to heighten the profile of the town but it all takes time and money.
