Friends of the Market Muir

The Friends of the Market Muir was formed in 2004 following a successful campaign by the residents of Huntly to save the Market Muir from being sold for development. Such was the concern of its loss that although significant interest was shown during the marketing exercise, Aberdeenshire Council conceded that the facility should be retained as an open space for use by the current sporting user groups and the public in general.

The "Friends" comprise of members of the public and representative from the Boys League and Huntly Rugby Club with the aim of raising funds to provide necessary upgrades to the amenities on the Muir.

Improvements have already been made to the Pavilion changing rooms, showers and kitchen area through the generosity of the local people and in conjunction with the Council.

Further improvements are being planned such as rejuvenating the surface of the pitches, provision of park benches and litter bins and in the longer term an extension to the Pavilion is hoped can be achieved. The Friends are keen to hear of any suggestions the public may have for further improvements and/or additional facilities on the Muir. These can be made known via the fmm@huntly.net web site or to any committee member.

Fund raising activities, such as Raffles, Stalls in the Square, Quiz Nights, Coffee Mornings and Dances in the Stewarts Hall have been held and similar activities are planned for the future.

Generous donations have been received from numerous individuals, groups, organisations and businesses all of which are greatly appreciated. Applications have also been made to public bodies for grant funding.

On behalf of the "Friends" I would like to thank the support and generosity of all who have supported the efforts to date in recognition of our cause.

With local support we wish to make a difference for the benefit of the people of Huntly.
