VSA Carers Services

A carer is someone who without payment provides help and support to a partner, child, relation, friend or neighbour who couldn't manage without their help. This could be due to age, physical or mental illness, addiction or disability. Many carers don't consider themselves carers, they are just looking after their son or daughter, friend or relative, getting on with doing what anyone else would do in that situation. They don't choose to take on this role it just happens, if it didn't what would happen to the person they look after?

VSA offers a range of services for carers across Aberdeenshire, including benefit advice, information and general carer support as well as organising regular carer's events. We provide one to one support, home visits as well as support groups, opportunities for meeting with other carers socially and for training.

We meet every month at the Linden Centre, Huntly for the carers in the area to have chance to meet with others, share information, discuss issues or just to meet up for a chat over a coffee and cakes.

We run a variety of events throughout the year from information days on carer's rights/trust funds etc to workshops on life coaching.

We have a bimonthly newsletter offering useful advice and information for all carers as well as calendar events and groups. Carers are also invited to contribute information that they feel would benefit other carers.

VSA hosts a carer's forum every three months. This is an open meeting for carers, their representatives, people who have an interest in carer's issues and people whose work brings them into contact with carers. This provides an opportunity for carers and professionals to meet in an informal setting, information can be shared and members kept informed about changes to legislations and local/national initiatives that impact on carers. Information is then passed on from the Carers Forum to the Aberdeenshire Carers Strategy Group in Aberdeen.

Our next Carers forum is due to be held in Huntly In March 2013
